Photos of Indigenous resistance

Many of the forests of Brazil are still intact due to the Indigenous people who resisted the advance of colonial powers. Where Indigenous nations were overcome, the forests and the animals and people they supported have largely been replaced by cattle ranches or soy farms.

7,000 Indigenous occupy Brasília

As the Brazilian government was voting on a new law to open up Indigenous territories to mining and other extractive industries, thousands of people representing nearly all of the contacted tribes made camp in Brasília. The event was called by APIB, a pan-Indigenous movement championing the rights of the original people of Brazil, and drawing attention to their struggles on the international stage.

According to Complicity in Destruction IV, a report published by Amazon Watch and APIB, an estimated that 62,000 hectares of land in the Amazon would be destroyed as a result of this new new law. The passing of the law has been delayed as a result.

We would like to thank our supporters for making it possible for RAIN to fund Kauê Terena and his colleagues in making the trip to the protest.
