Trees of music

Pernambuco wood has been used for hundreds of years to make violin bows. It is highly endangered, and Marco is planting seeds to safeguard the future of classical music

Marco Raposo is a Brazilian bow maker.

As musicians have known for centuries, the best wood for violin bows comes from the pau-brasil tree, the tree that Brazil is named after. It has the perfect strength, flexibility and resonance, and nothing else sounds quite right.

But the trees are endangered following centuries of deforestation.

Marco is making artisan bows with re-claimed wood, but now he wants to go much further. He wants to grow 50,000 Pau Brasilia saplings to ensure that this magical, musical wood doesn't die out completely.

We at RAIN are helping him. And we need your help too.

This project is in its infancy, and will be launched with full accompaniment from the strings section in the new year. If you have connections in the classical music world who can help, or would like to play us a tune to accompany the campaign, please get in touch.

In the meantime, watch Marco describing the project, and check out the trailer for the feature film about this tree.
