Indigenous reforestation project funded!

We’re delighted to report that we have part-funded our project with the Kaingang nation, to plant their sacred tree in order to regenerated their ancestral lands. The project will start with a road trip to collect a range of seeds, that will be planted in the new nursery.

Symbiosis between the Kaingang, the Parana Pine and the animal kingdom

Kretã Kaingang, national leader of the Kaingang nation, introduces the Parana pine and their reforestation project

The Kaingang have been cultivating this tree for at least 1000 years, selecting for strains that produce pine nuts in different months of the year, in order to attract game for a longer period. This means that it attracts birds for nine months of the year, and the birds bring in their bellies seeds from other trees that ripen over that entire period. The seeds left behind grow into other trees, making the Parana pine the ideal regenerative species.

Half of the trees produced will go to other Indigenous nations, so they can also benefit from this mutually beneficial symbiosis between man, flora and fauna. The idea is to encourage other Indigenous groups to start planting their own sacred trees, because Indigenous regeneration projects are the most successful. If you or your business would like to support other groups, please join the mailing list so we can let you know when other projects come online.
